The “Myanmar Earthquake Recovery Scholarship” seeks to empower youth impacted by the disaster by providing access to education, vocational training, and psychological support.
This initiative aims to address immediate needs while fostering long-term resilience among survivors.
On March 28, 2025, Myanmar experienced a catastrophic 7.7-magnitude earthquake centered near Sagaing, close to Mandalay—the country’s second-largest city. The disaster resulted in extensive loss of life, destruction of infrastructure, and displacement of hundreds of thousands of people. Hospitals are overwhelmed, and many communities remain inaccessible due to damaged roads and bridges. Extreme temperatures and ongoing political instability compound the humanitarian crisis.
Myanmar’s education system, already weakened by years of conflict and systemic neglect, faces new challenges as schools are destroyed and students displaced. With enrollment rates declining sharply since the 2021 military coup, the earthquake has further disrupted access to education for millions of children and youth. Education is critical for recovery—offering hope, stability, and opportunities for affected communities to rebuild their lives.
Key Focus Areas
Scholarships For Affected Youth
Financial support will be provided to cover school fees, learning materials, and other educational expenses, specifically targeting displaced children and students whose schools have been destroyed.
Vocational Training Program
Training centers will be established to offer courses in trades like carpentry, agriculture, tailoring, and IT, with a strong emphasis on collaboration with local organizations to ensure the curriculum and offerings are aligned with the specific needs of the community.
Key Focus Areas
Psychological Support Initiative
Trauma recovery workshops and resilience-building activities will be conducted for students, alongside training initiatives for teachers and community leaders in psychological first aid techniques.
Community Rehabilitation
Local stakeholders will be actively engaged in the implementation of the program to foster sustainability, while also promoting community-led education initiatives that directly contribute to broader recovery efforts.
